The mercurial artistry of Chan Marshall, known as Cat Power, has made her one of the most fascinating figures to emerge from the modern rock scene over the last decade. With a potent albeit minimalist sound and formidable yet sometimes elusive songwriting gifts, she challenges indie-rock conventions (as witnessed by 2000’s The Covers Record, on which she deconstructed songs by the Rolling Stones, ’60s psychedelic cult heroes Moby Grape and Bob Dylan, among others) while remaining among its most independent artists. Her latest, The Greatest, is true to that form, recorded in Memphis with some of the city’s finest classic soul musicians. Her first appearance at the Austin City Limits Music Festival should be, as per her usual, a distinctively unique performance by a budding artist for all time.
