Reviews for Carolina Chocolate Drops: 4/27/2007 Cabin Stage, MerleFest, NC

I saw this group a few weekends ago at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and they were absolutly phenomanal. It was a very rainy and dreary day and they still managed to have people out of their seats dancing around in the mud and clapping to the music, which on this bad of a day was quite a feat.

This set really stopped me in my tracks that night. I was so excited to be able to find it here at Festivalink.

One of the things I love about Merlefest is finding new artists (at least new to me). One year it was the Avett Brothers, the next year Hayes Carll. Well, this year it was the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

You can`t help but imagine yourself on a front porch somewhere stompin` along with them. Even though they were playing to tens of thousands that night - this set still feels very intimate.

After you listen to this .. go ahead and break out your Old Crow Medicine Show!

Cabin stage performances are some of my favorites from MerleFest, because it`s such a humble setting, and the sets are short, so the musicians really pare their choices down to some of their best.
The Cabin stage was the perfect backdrop for a first introduction to the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I`d heard them on NPR and read a bit about them. Seeing them live adds another dimension to understanding the string band traditions. Catch a show, and in the meantime, check out this gem.
